Sir Roger Bannister's name will forever by synonymous with the mile, after his landmark in sporting history, running the first ever sub-4 minute mile. It is fitting that the first post in this blog commemorates his epic feat. There are a lot of videos out there with footage of the race, but I particularly like this one as it includes footage of Sir Roger being interviewed on the anniversary of his achievement in 2014.
I also like this video as it shows a lot of the race and you get a real sense of the effort he put in to achieve the feat.
In under 2 hours time, at the same time as the original run 66 years ago I will be doing a mile as part of the British Milers’ Club Bannister Virtual Miles. My aim is more modest, to break 6 minutes, and even that might be a stretch. Full results for the BMC Bannister Virtual Miles are here.
